Prayers Before and After Reading the Word

Advent
Prayer before Reading the Word
In this and every year,
in this and every place,
O God everlasting,
your word resounds in the wilderness of Advent,
calling us to stand upon the height
and to behold the splendor of your beauty.

Fill in the valleys of our neglect;
bring low our mountains of self-centeredness.
Prepare in our hearts
your way of righteousness and peace.
Let our love become a harvest of goodness,
which you will bring to completion
for the day of Christ Jesus,
who was, who is, and who is to come,
your Son who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer after Reading the Word
God of holiness,
whose promises stand through all generations,
fulfill the longings of a humanity
weighed down by confusion and burdened with fear.
Raise up our heads and strengthen our hearts,
that we may proclaim to all people
the Good News of your presence in our midst.
May we delight to share with them
your peace, which surpasses all understanding.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen

Christmas
Prayer before Reading the Word
By the light of a star, O God of the universe,
You guided the nations to the Light of the world.

Until this Redeemer comes again in glory,
We, with the Magi, seek the face of the Savior.
Summon us with all those who thirst now
to the banquet of love,
May our hunger be filled and our thirst
be quenched with your word of truth.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer after Reading the Word
In the beginning, O God, was your Word,
And now in time your Word becomes flesh,
The light that shines unconquered
through the darkness of the ages,
and has made his dwelling place among us,
transforming earth's gloom into heaven's glory.

As we behold upon the mountains
the messenger who announces your peace,
touch our lips as well that we may lift up our voices
as bearers of Good News and heralds of salvation.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ,
Emmanuel, God with us,
your Son who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.

Ordinary Time, Winter
Prayer before Reading the Word
In you, O Lord our God,
we find our joy,
for through your law and your prophets
you formed a people in mercy and freedom,
in justice and righteousness.
You call us with your voice of flame.
Give us ears to hear,
lives to respond,
and voices to proclaim the Good News of salvation,
which we know in our Savior Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever. Amen.

Prayer after Reading the Word
In your word, Lord God,
you reveal your power to heal and save us.
Let this Good News echo throughout the world,
in every tongue and in every culture,
so that people everywhere may gladly embrace
the salvation and life you offer to all.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen

Lent
Prayer before Reading the Word
O Lord, great and faithful God,
it is good for us to be here!
Let us listen to your Son, your chosen One.

Shatter the hardness of our hearts
and open our minds to the wisdom of the Gospel,
that we may grasp the lessons you teach us daily
and bring forth the fruit of true
and continual conversion.

We ask this through the One
into whom we have been baptized,
our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer after Reading the Word
Infinite is your compassion, O God,
and gracious is the pardon
that Jesus, the Teacher, offers
to every sinner who stands before him.

Gladden our hearts
at the word that sends us on our way in peace;
and grant that we who have been found by your grace
may gladly welcome to the table of your family
all who long to find their way home.

We ask this through Christ,
our peace and reconciliation,
the Lord who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.

Easter
Prayer before Reading the Word
God of our ancestors,
you have raised up Jesus
and exalted him at your right hand
as Leader and Savior.

Open our minds to understand the scriptures,
and, as with great joy we bless you in your temple,
make us witnesses who can proclaim
the repentence and forgiveness
you extend to all the nations
in the name of Jesus,
the Messiah, our great high priest,
who intercedes before you on our behalf,
living and reigning with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer after Reading the Word
O God, the fountain of joy and peace,
into the hands of your risen Son
you have entrusted the destinies
of peoples and of nations.

Keep us safe in those arms
from which no one can snatch us,
that we may proclaim your word
in peace and in persecution,
until at last we stand before the Lamb,
with songs of praise on our lips.

We ask this through the Lord Jesus,
our Passover and our Peace,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.

Ordinary Time, Summer
Prayer before Reading the Word
Wise and merciful God,
grant us a heart thirsting for your truth,
longing for your presence,
and ready to hear you in the word of your Son.
Grant us the wisdom of your Spirit,
the understanding bestowed on the true disciples,
that we may carry the cross each day
and follow after your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer after Reading the Word
Your word resounds in your Church, O God,
as a fountain of wisdom and a rule of life;
make us, O God, faithful disciples of that wisdom,
whose Teacher and Master is Christ
and whose chair of learning is the cross.
Schooled in this unique wisdom,
may we be prepared to conquer our fears and temptations,
to take up our cross daily
and to follow Jesus toward true life.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
In the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.

Ordinary Time, Autumn
Prayer before Reading the Word
God of the covenant,
whose promises can never fail,
in every age you place your words
on the lips of the prophets.
We children of this age come to you in faith,
longing to be transformed in Christ
as children of the Resurrection.

Give us humility of heart.
Let us cling to your word
in Moses, the prophets, and the Gospel.
Let each new day be for us
a time to testify to the Gospel.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer after Reading the Word
O God, author of life and resurrection,
before whom even the dead are alive,
grant that the word of your Son,
sown in our hearts,
may blossom and bear fruit in every good work,
so that both in life and in death
our hearts may be strengthened
by eternal comfort and good hope.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.
